Baroness
Spotlight show • This is Baroness' first Utah show since the 2012 release of "Yellow & Green," which was immediately followed by a horrific bus accident. Singer and guitar player John Baizley's extensive injuries left the Georgia-based metal band unable to tour. In an interview with The Tribune, Baizley said "everybody's doing great" now, and anxious to finally play "Yellow & Green" for audiences. Two members left the band in March. They've been replaced by Nick Jost on bass and Sebastian Thomson on drums. "Yellow & Green" follows in the tradition of the band's prior albums. Heavy metal magazine Revolver named "Red" the best album of 2007, and "Blue" was named the 20th Greatest Metal Album in History by LA Weekly in 2013. Even with that track record, Baizley admitted to being nervous about playing the new album live. "The opening night, we had white knuckles." Opening for Baroness is Royal Thunder.

Serena Ryder
Spotlight show • The 30-year-old singer-songwriter was hand-picked by Ryan Tedder to open for his band OneRepublic, which is headlining this Deer Valley show. Sara Bareilles is also on the bill. Ryder said her new single "Stompa," which is gaining traction on rock stations, caught Tedder's attention. "You never really know" why a particular song becomes a hit while others don't, she said. Ryder grew up in Canada and began performing at an early age. Receiving a guitar at age 13 changed the mezzo-soprano's life. "It was total freedom," she said. After singing others' songs, she suddenly began to write her own. "I had dabbled in piano, but you can't take that to the park." Ryder learned to play her new instrument by strumming along to Neil Young's "Harvest," and over the years has learned to play virtually every instrument used in rock recordings. She is modest about that, though. "I only say I play guitar," she said. "The others I bash away on like a monkey."

Salt Lake City International Jazz Festival
Spotlight show • Lena Prima and Macy Gray (with David Murray) are just two of the stars of this annual festival, which is preceded by a day of clinics at the University of Utah. The festival moved from the midsummer to Labor Day weekend, said founder Jerry Floor, because "our big emphasis is on education," and schools are out in July. Other performers include Jazz Voices of Poetry, the Ambassadors, Orquesta Latino, the Wasatch Jazz Project, the Vinnie Falcone All-Stars and the Salt Lake Jazz Orchestra. There's also an after-hours jam session. Prima, who performs at 7:30 p.m., is Louis Prima's youngest daughter and a New Orleans-based headliner, just like her dad. Gray, who performs at 9:30 p.m., is the 43-year-old soul and R&B singer best known for her chart-topping hit "I Try" in 1999. Gray will be with Murray, an acclaimed tenor saxophonist and bass clarinet player who is a founding member of the World Saxophone Quartet with Oliver Lake, Julius Hemphill and Hamiet Bluiett.

Sick Puppies
Spotlight show • It has been seven years since the Australian modern rock trio rose to prominence when its song "All the Same" was uploaded with a YouTube video that supported the Free Hugs Campaign. Since then, it has been seen nearly 75 million times. The Sick Puppies are still going strong, with the new album "Connect" released in July. Frontmen Shim Moore said the album was influenced by 2011's "Polar Opposite," which featured acoustic versions of their best-known songs, augmented by classical strings. That left turn "totally changed what we did," Moore said. "It gave us freedom." That doesn't mean the band has softened its approach or music, even though the latter half of "Connect" is dominated by acoustic guitars. In fact, the anthemic new single, "There's No Going Back," features the refrain, "F**k that going back." The band still features the spirit that has emboldened the members since the core began in high school. "There's a different kind of work ethic, growing up in Australia," Moore said. "It gives you a fire." Candlelight Red also will perform

T. Hardy Morris
Spotlight show • T. Hardy Morris is the leader of rock band Dead Confederate and a member of the rock supergroup Diamond Rugs. But he is currently touring to support his solo album "Audition Tapes." To promote the album, he traveled to different places through his home state of Georgia, video-recording sites listed on the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation's list of "Places in Peril." One of the places he visited was the Paradise Garden created by the late minister and folk artist Howard Finster, who created the memorable album cover for "Reckoning" made by another Georgia band, R.E.M. And R.E.M. filmed its breakthrough video for "Radio Free Europe" at the same location. "You feel like you're embedded in the installations," Morris said of Paradise Gardens. "It's pretty surreal." He spoke to The Tribune during a break in a recording session with the Diamond Rugs, which includes members of Los Lobos and Deer Tick. "We're all cut from the same cloth," he said of the group. Jason Isbell headlines the show.

Audra McDonald
Spotlight show • Not only has Audra McDonald won five Tony Awards, but she is married to a Utahn. (Which is more important?) The talented soprano and star of "Private Practice" wed Will Swenson in late 2012. Swenson is now a Broadway star in his own right after getting his start with locally made films "The Singles Ward" and its sequel, "The Singles 2nd Ward." In an interview, McDonald said she has a lot of memories in Utah, including a gig singing with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and co-starring with Swenson in Hale Center Theater Orem's 2010 summer production of the musical "110 in the Shade." "Being with my husband and visiting family [in Utah] is always special."
