Water gushing from a broken water main caused significant damage to four homes in Murray.
The 12-inch main near 900 W. Walden Hills Drive (5585 South) broke shortly before 4 p.m. Sunday, sending water rushing downhill, said Murray Fire Battalion Chief Mike Dykman. Neighbors acted quickly to dike and dam the water, but it still managed to flood the garages and basements of four homes.
Making a conservative guess, Dykman estimated that each homeowner suffered $50,000 to $60,000 in damages. But "it could have been a whole lot worse than it was" without the neighbors' quick actions, Dykman added.
The public works department shut off the water to the neighborhood and was working Sunday evening to repair the damage. The department expected to restore normal service by Monday morning, Dykman said.
The city has not yet determined a cause for the break.
