Draper • It might have been the first game between new crosstown rivals Juan Diego and Corner Canyon at the start of a new football season. But judging by the intensity on the field and the overflow crowd, this could be the makings of a big-time rivalry.

It took a 67-yard run by Cameron Hansen with 1 minute, 57 seconds to play to give the 3AA Soaring Eagle a 21-14 victory over a Corner Canyon team playing the first game in school history to decide this one Friday.

"I saw a huge crease and I just took it," said Hansen, whose long kickoff return to open the second half set up Juan Diego's second score. "It will be a rivalry. They are a great squad. They had us nervous all the way through the fourth quarter."

Soaring Eagle coach John Colosimo was more inclined to talk about Hansen's big run than to comment much on whether this could be a rivalry. He hinted that next year's return game at Corner Canyon might be the last for awhile due to some unhappiness with the Chargers.

"Cameron got that big run at the end," he said. "We kind of softened them up. It was a big play for us."

Juan Diego, a 3A power for years that runs a run-oriented offense, never trailed Friday.

The Soaring Eagle took advantage of an early Charger fumble to take a 7-0 lead on a 5-yard pass from Cole Nelson to Gabe Colosimo. But Corner Canyon tied it with 40.5 seconds left in the half when quarterback Michael Ebling earned the honor of scoring the school's first touchdown on a 7-yard run.

Hansen's big second-half opening kickoff return set up his 5-yard TD run early in the third quarter.

A fumble recovery by the Chargers' Coleman Broman set up his team's second touchdown, a 5-yard pass from Ebling to Izaak Brinton.

That paved the way for Hansen's fourth-quarter heroics in a game where both teams showed promise for the coming season and, in the end, seemed very much as if it could become a rivalry.
