New York • The Yankees have recalled reliever Preston Claiborne from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to replace injured infielder Jayson Nix on the roster.

Nix was placed on the 15-day disabled list Thursday with a broken left hand after he was hit by a pitch from Toronto's R.A. Dickey the night before. New York manager Joe Girardi says he expects Nix to miss the rest of the season.

Claiborne returns for his third stint with the Yankees this year. He was called up for Tuesday's doubleheader against the Blue Jays and optioned right back to the minors afterward.

The rookie right-hander is 0-1 with a 2.74 ERA in 35 relief appearances.

The move left the Yankees with a three-man bench and no backups for shortstop Eduardo Nunez or second baseman Robinson Cano, at least until Derek Jeter comes off the disabled list.
