College football • The NCAA ruled Monday that a Middle Tennessee football player who spent five years in the Marines will be allowed to compete this fall and that he will have four years of eligibility remaining. It's a reversal from the NCAA's earlier decision to rule Steven Rhodes was ineligible because he played in a recreational league during his military service.
The NCAA issued a news release saying Rhodes could play immediately and member schools would continue to re-examine the competition rules, especially as they impact those returning from military service. The 6-foot-3, 240-pound Rhodes has been practicing at both tight end and defensive end.
Sagan wins Stage 1 of Colorado race
cycling • Peter Sagan of Slovakia surged to the front just after the final corner and sprinted to a two-bike length win and took the race lead Monday in Stage 1 of the USA Pro Challenge in Aspen, Colo. Sagan a four-time stage winner in the Tour de France who rides the Italy-based Cannondale team, completed the 60.6-mile, three-lap circuit race in 2 hours, 26 minutes. Greg Van Avermaet (BMC) of Belgium finished second and Kiel Reijnan (UnitedHealthcare) of the United States was third.
Sagan's win was his 16th this season and the 54th victory of his five-year pro career.
Chris Froome (Sky) of Great Britain, the reigning Tour de France champion, finished in the main field.
Bobcats sign forward Tolliver
NBA • The Charlotte Bobcats have announced they've signed free agent forward Anthony Tolliver. The 6-foot-8 Tolliver has played five seasons in the NBA with the Spurs, Trail Blazers, Warriors, Timberwolves and Hawks. Tolliver played in 62 games last season with Atlanta, averaging 4.1 points and 2.5 rebounds in 15.5 minutes per game.
