A pair of Park City photographers has been recognized by the Professional Photographers of America for a panoramic image taken in Zion National Park.
Jared and Trish McMillen and their photograph, "Moody Blues," earned a spot in the PPA's international photographic competition, "Loan Collection."
"I don't know if it's the blues or the water, it's just very calming," Jared McMillen said of the southern Utah image that will be published in the PPA's annual book. It also will be on exhibit in Phoenix during the 2014 Imaging USA convention.
The couple operate their gallery, McMillen Fine Art Photography, in Park City. Their images have made the covers of magazines such as National Geographic Traveler, Time and Forbes and recently took home top awards for panoramic photos at the 2013 Epson International Pano Competition. They won silver and bronze medals in the contest of about 900 photographers.
The two spent most of their careers in Las Vegas, photographing politicians, celebrities and professional athletes. They now focus on Western landscapes.
The couple sometimes use digital cameras, but continue to shoot with film, as they did for this image. It requires taking one picture per visit, instead of many. And it meant trekking miles into the canyons and waiting for the perfect light, Jared McMillen said. "I think that's what makes it a little more special."
