A Nephi man with an extensive criminal record appears likely to return to Utah State Prison after crashing a stolen car at the end of an extended high-speed chase through several Utah County communities.
Brian Francis Filion, 34, already had a decade-long court record of charges ranging from theft, domestic violence and assault to drunk driving and other traffic violations when he allegedly crashed into an unmarked police car and then rolled off Interstate 15 near Benjamin on Monday afternoon.
Utah County Sheriff's Sgt. Spencer Cannon said Tuesday that the chase began when a Saratoga Springs police officer spotted Filion driving a stolen 2001 Saturn L-200 sedan and attempted to pull him over. The ensuing chase, reaching speeds of 110 mph, proceeded onto southbound I-15, with the suspect weaving in an out of the lanes.
A sheriff's deputy picked up the chase in American Fork and the pursuit continued on I-15 past Spanish Fork to near Benjamin, where the fleeing vehicle clipped the unmarked car and spun out of control, crashing.
Filion was arrested, treated for minor injuries at a hospital and then booked into the Utah County jail on suspicion of auto theft, speeding, reckless driving and other charges.
Utah Department of Corrections spokesman Steve Gehrke said Filion was most recently released from prison in September 2012.
