A West Valley City man was struck and killed late Saturday, and a motorist was arrested for allegedly causing his death.
West Valley City police Sgt. Jeff Conger said Kevin Chase, 42, of West Valley City, was jaywalking across the street about 11:30 p.m. at 4000 S. Redwood Road when he was struck by a white minivan driven by Zay Speed, 56, of West Valley City.
Chase died at the scene.
Conger said Speed drove a short distance away, then jumped out of the van and tried to run from police.
Conger said the investigation revealed that Speed was allegedly driving under the influence of drugs at the time of the crash.
He was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on suspicion of driving under the influence, hit and run and automobile homicide, police said.
