A wildfire continued to burn thousands of acres in Beaver and Iron counties Friday, though authorities expected to make significant progress before the weekend.
By Friday morning the Black Mountain Fire had burned 4,566 acres 3 miles southeast of Minersville, according to Bureau of Land Management spokesman Nick Howell. The fire stayed the same size through the day, but fire crews were able to get it mostly contained by Friday night.
The fire grew only slightly from Thursday, when activity was minimal but wind drove smoke and ash toward Cedar City.
The lightning-sparked fire was 80 percent contained Friday night. One cabin was threatened.
Howell reported that there were approximately 282 people fighting the fire Friday morning from the ground and the air.
Two firefighters were treated Wednesday for heat exhaustion and dehydration but are expected to make a full recovery.
