Difference makers

The dedication and energy required to be excel at athletics is overwhelming. But these four student-athletes decided to do more than be the best on the field, track or court. They decided to assist those less fortunate, to take some time to go above and beyond to help someone else. Whether it was serving as a translator for Spanish-speaking parents at an elementary school or raising funds to assist a community half a world away, these student-athletes funneled their passion into making the world a better place for someone else. These four are just a sampling of the many student-athletes around the state who are offering their talents to help others.

Offering help on a global scale • Highland's Maddy Keller traveled to a town in Mexico to help build homes for families as well as donate hundreds of books to the town's students.

Man of many words • Park City's Alejandro Vieyra served as a translator at Parley's Park Elementary to offer assistance to the school's Spanish-speaking parents.

Giving the shirt off his back • Brighton's Travis Devashrayee helped organize a collection of formal wear to donate to students at an alternative school in the Salt Lake Valley.

Touching those half a world away • Sky View's Brenna Porter served as the co-chair of an organization that raised money to build a health clinic and library in a town in Ghana.

Year in review

Best male athlete of the year • Ben Saarel

The Park City senior owns the state records in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meters after claiming three straight cross-country titles.

Best female athlete of the year • Malia Nawahine

The Springville senior who will play basketball at the U. led the Red Devils to an undefeated season and the Class 4A state title.

Best boys' school • Bingham

The Miners captured the state championship in baseball after reaching the state semifinals in football and the state title game in soccer.

Best girls' school • St. Joseph

The Jayhawks, whose school's enrollment is 170 students, secured state titles in basketball and golf and finished second in volleyball and soccer.
