Fire heavily damages Salt Lake City apartment building

A second-floor apartment fire quickly spread beyond its walls, damaged several units in Salt Lake City and displaced almost 50 people on Sunday.

About 2 p.m. a fire broke out in the middle unit at City Park Apartments, 756 N. 900 West, then moved up walls to the third floor and attic, said Salt Lake City Fire Department spokesman Jasen Asay.

No one was injured, and the cause is still under investigation.

The building had smoke detectors but no sprinklers, Asay said. It took firefighters until 3:10 p.m. to control the fire and put out hot spots.

The record heat helped the fire spread and affected the nearly 50 firefighters who responded to the three-alarm blaze.

Since the utilities are now shut off to the building, none of the residents were able to stay in the building Sunday night. Red Cross was on scene to help them find a place to stay.
