Sports briefs: Quarterback Golson leaves Notre Dame

COLLEGE FOOTBALL • Quarterback Everett Golson is no longer enrolled at Notre Dame. University spokesman Dennis Brown said Saturday night that Golson, who had three years of eligibility left after not playing as a freshman, was no longer enrolled at Notre Dame as of Friday. Brown says he couldn't comment on why because of federal privacy laws.

Golson helped lead the Fighting Irish to an undefeated regular season and the BCS title game last season as a first-time starter.

The departure leaves a major question mark for coach Brian Kelly's offense. The most likely replacement is Tommy Rees, the 2011 starter. The other possibilities are senior Andrew Hendrix and freshman Malik Zaire.

Gay wins 100 meters in N.Y.

Racing • Tyson Gay accomplished all his goals at the Adidas Grand Prix in New York: He won, put his body through the grind of rounds — and stayed injury-free. On a cold, rainy afternoon, the American-record holder eased to victory in the 100 meters, finishing in 10.02 seconds into a headwind Saturday. He appeared to slow down a bit at the end but still beat countryman Ryan Bailey by 0.13.

Manchester City tops Chelsea

Soccer • Far away from the jeering supporters at London's Stamford Bridge, coach Rafa Benitez completed his brief but productive reign at Chelsea with a 5-3 loss to Manchester City in a season-ending exhibition game Saturday night in New York. In a wide-open match largely devoid of tough tackles and less physical than many training sessions, Samir Nasri scored twice for City and Ramires had two goals for Chelsea.
