Montreal • Real Salt Lake finally got to play with an early lead. Once that slipped away, captain Kyle Beckerman put them ahead again with 13 minutes left. That second one-goal lead evaporated minutes later and then substitute Joao Plata went in on a breakaway with five minutes to go.

Yet somehow, Real Salt Lake left its first game in Montreal without a point.

RSL was moments away from at least remaining undefeated in its third straight game when Montreal's Matteo Ferrari scored on a corner kick in injury time to give the Impact a 3-2 win at Saputo Stadium.

"Their last corner kick is something that we need to be able to clear or beat them to the ball," Real goalkeeper Nick Rimando said. "And that's one thing that I'm sure that we'll look at on video and clear up and make sure it doesn't happen again."

Beckerman scored 77 minutes in to give RSL its second one-goal lead at 2-1. Impact striker Marco Di Vaio answered three minutes later to draw the home side even at 2-2 in the 80th minute.

"I think it was just a lack of concentration at the end, and it was just a bit unfortunate for us," Beckerman said. "If we had been a little bit better on our chances, we could have been in a position where even if they score at the end we're still in the lead. But we didn't take all our chances as we could have, and so we paid the price."

Plata had a golden opportunity to put Real ahead for a third time, but he was denied by Montreal goalkeeper Troy Perkins on a breakaway in the 85th minute.

"We're going to need him to score that goal," coach Jason Kreis. "We're going to need players to take advantage and score the goal and kill the game off."

Montreal accounted for both goals in the first half, including an own-goal six minutes in. Impact midfielder Felipe Martins tied it at 1-1 in the 39th minute.

Real Salt Lake, which had won two in a row and three of four, got the early lead when Lovel Palmer's 30-yard shot deflected off Ferrari's foot and the ball shot up and over Perkins.

"It was a disappointing result for sure, an amateur way to fall to a team that I thought we played a good game to," Rimando said. "The amount of veterans that we have on this team and we should be able to tie back and know that a point on the road is OK, and we went for the goal and a set piece that we harp on determines a point for us, so it's disappointing for sure, but we've got to move on."

Briefly

A moment of silence was observed prior to kickoff in memory of Utah soccer referee Ricardo Portillo. The 46-year-old Portillo died as a result of head injuries he suffered from being punched by a 17-year-old player while he was officiating a game in Taylorsville. "It was cool that they would be willing to do that in Montreal," Kreis said. "It's obviously an incredibly catastrophic, tragic event that happened and you just can't put words to it, so I'm glad we were able to recognize that."... Real Salt Lake Defender Carlos Salcedo did not start but was dressed as a reserve and available to play. MLS rescinded a second yellow card against Salcedo in Wednesday's 2-1 win at New England that removed what would have been an automatic suspension for Saturday's game. —
