Utah Reggae Festival with Daniel Marley
spotlight show • Having moved from Ogden to Salt Lake City, this festival will feature Dirty Heads, Tribal Seeds, Daniel Marley and Fortunate Youth with support from Codi Jordan Band, Natural Roots and Know Ur Roots. The special guest is 24-year-old Daniel Marley, grandson of Bob and son of Ziggy, who is making his first trip to Utah. "I know about the Utah Jazz," he said in a recent telephone interview. "John Stockton." Marley was a regular on tour buses when he was a toddler and started making beats before most of us could spell the word. He wrote his first full-fledged song at 13 and now is adding modern elements to music that his grandfather brought to the masses. "It's all in the genes," he said. Music comes to him constantly, and even when he was on the phone with The Tribune, he admitted, "I am thinking of a song right now. I'm thinking of melodies right now. It's not magic. It's what [I'm] here to do." Where does it come from? "Without the Creator, we are nothing," he said.

Eli Young Band
spotlight show • Kenny Chesney headlines this show, with openers Kacey Musgraves and Eli Young Band. The latter is a successful touring band that has scored top-charting country hits "Crazy Girl" and "Even If It Breaks Your Heart." Despite the success, the group's name creates an identity problem, said band member Jon Jones. Someone inevitably asks "Which member is Eli Young?" Jones said the name is a combination of the last names of two band members, Mike Eli and James Young. All four members of the Texan band are equal partners, but Jones said he — and drummer Chris Thompson — didn't mind that the band wasn't called the Eli Young Jones Thompson Band. "It doesn't sell T-shirts," he joked. The band began at the University of North Texas in 2000, but it wasn't until 2011's "Life at Best" that it broke through. Today, the band is working on its next album. "The pressure is on for the next record," Jones said. "It feels like it will be our sophomore record," even though technically it is the band's fifth. The breakthrough came when the band worked with the producers of Miranda Lambert, who knew them well before she began her ascent on the TV show "Nashville Star." "We keep on getting big breaks," Jones said, which included a dream recording session with legendary country band Alabama.
