Five rural Utah teachers have been honored with Arch Coal Teacher Achievement Awards.
Teachers were nominated by the public and chosen by a panel of past winners. The awards were open to classroom teachers from Carbon, Emery, Sanpete and Sevier counties, and were worth $3,500 each.
This year's winners included Kathy S. Anderson of Salina Elementary School in Salina; Jesse Burrell of Gunnison Valley High in Gunnison; Reed Fehlberg of Canyon View Junior High in Huntington; Mark Lyons of Gunnison Valley High; and Kelly Peterson of North Sevier High in Salina. Gov. Gary Herbert and Utah Education Association President Sharon Gallagher-Fishbaugh attended the awards announcement Wednesday.
This is the program's seventh year of honoring teachers from the counties surrounding the Skyline, Sufco and Dugout Canyon mines operated by Canyon Fuel Company, a subsidiary of Arch Coal. The awards are underwritten by the Arch Coal Foundation, and partners include the State Office of Education, the UEA, Utah School Superintendents Association and a number of other school districts, groups and businesses.
