Salt Lake City offers free electronic waste recycling events

A series of free Saturday electronic waste (e-waste) recycling events will be held each month in Salt Lake City from May through August.

The Saturday events are sponsored by Samsung and will accept a wide variety of electronics from city and county residents. Business waste will not be accepted.

E-waste accepted at the community collection events include: computers, computer parts, televisions, cellphones, printers, scanners and cameras.

"Salt Lake City is offering a series of free e-waste recycling events to give residents an opportunity to dispose of electronics in a responsible way," said Debbie Lyons, Salt Lake City's resource recovery manager. "Historically, these events have been very popular, and we are expecting to collect 10,000 pounds of e-waste at each event."

Responsible recycling of e-waste is important to conserve natural resources and protect the environment, according to Lyons. Many common electronics contain toxic chemicals, including lead and mercury, which can be released into storm drains and groundwater if not handled properly.
