Unified Police Department officers making a routine traffic stop found themselves in foot pursuit of four suspects.
UPD Lt. Justin Hoyal said three of the suspects — including a man wanted on a federal drug warrant — were quickly apprehended late Monday night. The fourth, tracked down by a police dog, was in custody a short time later.
Hoyal said officers spotted the suspects' silver Nissan Altima near 3300 South and 900 East in Millcreek at 10:13 p.m. Monday and initiated a traffic stop. The vehicle slowed enough for the four occupant to all bail out four blocks later.
The fugitive driver — identified as 29-year-old Daniel Lemons — and a male and a female passenger, were quickly apprehended. The female was released at the scene, while Lemons, the other male and a third man, found by the dog nearby, were booked into Salt Lake County Jail.
Lemons remained behind bars Tuesday on the warrant. The other two men were booked for fleeing from a police officer.
Lemons' Utah criminal history includes assault, drug possession and theft cases going back several years.
Most recently, he was charged in 3rd District Court in connection with a West Valley City shoplifting incident in January. Prosecutors allege that during his arrest on suspicion of retail theft, Lemons struggled with officers and reached for a handgun in his waistband. Officers used a Taser to subdue him.
In 2011, Lemons had been convicted in 1st District Court on charges ranging from aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury, endangerment of a child and several counts of drug possession. He served one year in the Cache County Jail on those counts.
