Springville • A pair of black bear cubs who lost their mother are fattening up nicely at a wildlife rehab center.
Great Basin Wildlife Rescue executive director Patti Richards says Koda and Whiskey were found in central Utah in mid-March. The two male cubs weighed just five and six pounds.
The rehab center in Springville usually gets bear cubs weighing 40 pounds.
They started the two cubs on bottle feeding and gradually introduced greens, berries and other solid foods.
Koda now weighs 28 pounds and Whiskey weighss 22 pounds. They'll be transferred to the National Wildlife Research Center in Cache Valley in about two weeks when they are weaned from the bottle.
Richards says they are the eighth and ninth cubs rehabilitated at Great Basin.
