Utah veterans of America's "forgotten war," the Korean War, will be honored Wednesday in a ceremony at Memory Grove Park, east of the Capitol.
The nation is remembering the 60th anniversary of the Korean War, which ended in a cease-fire in July 1953.
About 141 Utah service members lost their lives in the war, in which the United States was fighting to defend the Republic of Korea (South Korea) against the Soviet-backed Democratic People's Republic of Korea. About 37,000 Americans died in the war.
The Utah Department of Veterans Affairs, along with the Department of Defense and a national committee commemorating the 60th anniversary, will honor Utah veterans of the war beginning at 1 p.m. at Memory Grove, 375 N. Canyon Road in Salt Lake City.
Terry Schow, executive director of the Utah department, said all Korean War veterans are encouraged to attend. The state has an estimated 17,000 Korean War veterans. The event is open to the public.
