Uintah County authorities are investigating the apparent homicide of a man found dead Sunday on the Uintah and Ouray Indian Reservation.

Bureau of Indian Affairs officers and deputies from the Uintah County Sheriff's Office were called about 4:15 p.m. Sunday to a wooded area on the reservation, Undersheriff John Laursen said in a news release. The FBI is also participating in the investigation.

The reservation, which is home to the Northern Ute Tribe, is located a few miles east of the two of Roosevelt, and about 150 miles east of Salt Lake City.

Authorities have not identified the man or said how he died. Police also have not detailed the exact location where the body was found.

An official cause of death is pending an autopsy report from the state medical examiner's office.

Telephone messages left for Uintah County Sheriff Jeff Merrell and the Ute Tribe's police chief were not immediately returned Sunday.

Additional information will be posted as soon as it becomes available.
