The peregrine falcons of downtown Salt Lake City delivered a fourth egg to their nest box on the Joseph Smith Memorial Building sometime early Saturday. High-definition cameras installed in the nest box broadcast the Salt Lake City peregrine falcons around the world via the Internet.
Egg No. 3 arrived about 9:30 a.m. on April 17th, egg No. 2 arrived early April 15th and the first egg of 2013 appeared April 12.
Peregrines typically lay four eggs, and followed that course in 2012. One of the eggs from last year failed to hatch. One of the three young peregrines from 2012 died after crashing into a building but two survived, although one spent the winter in a raptor-rehabilitation center before being released on Antelope Island.
State wildlife officials expect the eggs to hatch sometime during the week after Mother’s Day (May 12) and predict their first attempts at flight to happen near the end of June.
