Allstate is joining two other major insurers to offer usage-based car insurance to its Utah customers.
Those who opt into Allstate's Drivewise program will receive a small plug-in device for their car that measures mileage, braking, speed and time of day when a driver is behind the wheel. Allstate analyzes that data to determine if a customer's actual driving habits should be rewarded with a discount.
"This is truly a pay-how-you-drive program," Allstate Utah agent JC Arnett said in a prepared statement.
The state's largest car insurer, State Farm, has offered its Drive Safe and Save usage-based product to Utah customers since March 2012, and Progressive Insurance also offers its customers a similar product called Snapshot.
