A fifth-grader in Sevier County has been suspended and charged after allegedly bringing a stolen gun to school.

Richfield police announced Thursday that the 10-year-old student was charged with theft of a firearm and having a firearm at school after he reportedly brought a handgun to Pahvant Elementary, at 520 N. 300 West, on Tuesday. Another student became aware of the handgun in the boy's backpack and reported it to the school administration that afternoon, said Sevier School District Superintendent Myron Mickelsen.

Administrators called the Richfield police and the boy was suspended.

Police are still investigating the case, though they've learned that the handgun was stolen from a family friend the night before, according to a news release. The parents and the gun owner were unaware of the alleged theft, and at least two other children learned of the gun but said nothing, the release adds.

Mickelsen also could not say what caliber the handgun was.

The school can keep a student on suspension for up to 10 days. During that time, administrators will set up a hearing and decide whether any further discipline is needed, Mickelsen said.

Mickelsen was not aware of any another such incident in the school district's recent history.
