A crowd of Christian pastors, priests and parishioners walked somberly together around downtown Salt Lake City streets on Good Friday while singing hymns and taking turns carrying a giant wooden cross in a symbolic re-enactment of Jesus’ path to crucifixion.
The ritual, known as the Good Friday Procession of the Cross, has been a tradition in Utah for three decades. It unites believers from a variety of Christian denominations.
The procession started Friday at the Cathedral of the Madeleine, then moved to First Presbyterian Church, Crossroads Urban Center, Central Christian Church and First United Methodist Church. It ended at St. Mark’s Episcopal Cathedral. Various pastors offered prayers, recited scriptures and gave short sermons at spots along the way.
