Sandy police caught the man they suspect robbed a bank Thursday afternoon after he ditched his disguise and ducked into a movie.

About 3:50 p.m., the man walked into the Wells Fargo bank at 9491 S. 700 East, which is part of a strip mall, wearing a big straw hat, a big, fake bushy beard and a track suit, said Sgt. Jon Arnold. He walked up to a teller and demanded she hand over all the cash in her drawer, Arnold said.

The suspect indicated he had a gun, but he never displayed one, Arnold added. He then left the bank with a bag of money, ran across the parking lot and ditched the costume, including the track suit, in a nearby trash bin.

A witness told police that the suspect then ran from the trash bin to the nearby Cinemark Sandy Movies 9, a dollar theater. People at the theater were able to lead police to the suspect, who had gone into a movie screening — though Arnold did not know which one. The theater could not comment on the incident.

Police arrested the 36-year-old suspect and booked him into Salt Lake County jail on suspicion of aggravated robbery and obstruction of justice.
