Two horses died and two people were hospitalized after their vehicle crashed into the animals in Tooele County.

The couple was driving south on State Road 36 on Friday night when two horses escaped from a corral and walked onto the highway, said Utah Department of Public Safety Spokeswoman Susan Thomas. About 10:15 p.m., the passenger side of the vehicle struck both horses.

Tooele County dispatchers confirmed that the crash occurred near the intersection with State Road 73, east of Rush Valley.

The woman suffered several lacerations and a helicopter flew her to a nearby trauma center, Thomas said. The man was also taken to the hospital in an ambulance.
