Weber State football: Wildcats seek stabilty as spring football begins

When asked about entering spring practice facing only the typical football headaches, Weber State coach Jody Sears laughed.

"Stability is always a good thing," he said.

When the Wildcats take the field Tuesday morning for the first time, it will mark Sears' first spring camp as head coach. He was hired as defensive coordinator last season but elevated to head coach after spring practice when John L. Smith, who was on the job for only a few months, bolted for the University of Arkansas.

The Wildcats won just two games in 2012, both away from Ogden and Stewart Stadium. This spring, the focus is rebuilding leadership, confidence and finding a replacement for departed quarterback Mike Hoke.

WSU is scheduled to practice each Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, beginning at 6 a.m. each morning. The Wildcat will hold three scrimmages, scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. on Saturdays, beginning March 23.

The Wildcats will have 15 practice sessions during the spring and will conclude with the annual spring game April 13.

"Our biggest thing, the older guys, need to take on more of a leadership role," Sears said. "On paper, are we where we need to be? Not quite. But we're a lot further along than we were [last spring practice]."

Junior Jordan Adamczyk, Hoke's backup last season, and junior college transfer Alfonso Medina are expected to battle for the starting quarterback spot. Sears said Adamczyk starts practice in the "poll position," but "we want guys competing with every rep."

Both quarterbacks, as well as the rest of the offense, will work with newly-hired offensive coordinator Robin Pflugrad, formerly a head coach at Montana.
