Cedar City police are investigating a shooting at a residence that left one man dead and a woman hospitalized with serious injuries.

Police responded to a home in the 300 block of 400 West at about 2 p.m. Friday after a report about a suicidal man, police said in a news release. En route to the residence police received a second report that a shooting may have occurred inside the home.

A man outside the home told officers there were two people in the home and that at least one had been shot. The man said one of the people in the home may be armed with a handgun, police said.

Iron County's Metro SWAT team was called and entered the home to find a deceased man and a woman suffering from an apparent gunshot wound, police said.

Police took the man who was outside of the house into custody Friday evening and considered him a "person of interest" in the case, Cedar City police Sgt. Jimmy Roden said. Investigators are talking to the man to try to determine what events precipitated the shootings, he said.

The woman was initially transported to a local hospital and then taken by medical helicopter to Intermountain Medical Center in Murray.

Police did not immediately release the names of either shooting victim or the condition of the woman.

Investigators remained at the home Friday evening, police said.
