Seattle • Even on a night that started with a huge mistake, no one can beat Tory Wilson. Wilson earned her sixth straight vault title Friday in Utah's win over Washington with a 9.95.

Wilson's night didn't start very promising as she fell off the uneven bars and scored only 8.9. But she didn't let the rare mistake bother her as she came back on the vault and flirted with another perfect score.

The vault looked nearly as good as the one she had a week ago when she became just the seventh Ute to earn a 10.0 on the apparatus.

Wilson leads the country in the vault rankings with a 9.955 average.

While the Utes don't keep any official records on consecutive event wins, Wilson's feat on vault is a rare streak in today's collegiate gymnastics atmosphere, where parity reigns.

The vault got her back on track in the meet, as she finished strong, scoring 9.8 on the floor and 9.875 on the beam.

Utah coach Greg Marsden said he wasn't too worried about Wilson's mistake on the uneven bars since she has been working a new routine.

"I'll give her a pass on that, even though she hit last week," he said.

Switcheroo

The Utes experimented with some different lineups, using Breanne Hughes as the leadoff on bars and moving Kassandra Lopez deeper into the lineup. It was a mixed result, as Hughes scored 9.8 but Lopez posted just 9.3 after a balk.

On the balance beam, Becky Tutka and Wilson changed places, with Tutka scoring 9.725 on the beam in the leadoff position.

Marsden said there is still room for improvement on the beam, noting Tutka could be more aggressive and Georgia Dabritz needed to be cleaner.

Dabritz, who was second in the all-around with a 39.2, scored a 9.6 on the balance beam.

"There were some nice things, but again, we have to clean a lot of things up," Marsden said.

Local connections

Washington senior Meg Whitney, who transferred to Washington from Utah following her freshman year, scored a 9.8 on the vault in her only routine of the night.

Whitney, from Mesa, Ariz., had season highs of 9.8 on the vault and 9.625 on the floor with the Utes before she transferred to Washington.

Washington senior Kylie Sharp, who hails from Herriman and trained at Olympus School of Gymnastics, did not compete.
