A man driving through the parking lot of the Calloway Apartment complex in Taylorsville crashed his car and damaged a covered parking awning after he reportedly lost control in an unsuccessful drive-by shooting Tuesday afternoon.

United Police Department spokesman Ken Hansen said no one was injured in the 3:30 p.m. shooting, although a pickup that was parked nearby was hit by bullets. Hansen said that the alleged shooter was picked up by police who responded. The man seemed to be stunned from the crash, which took down a support pole for the awning and caused the structure to fall down on top of the car.

Hansen said the man was initially believed to be a victim, but further investigation revealed that he was the shooter. The man, who Hansen said is in his 20s, tried to hide his gun by throwing it in a Dumpster.

A canine unit from UPD initially responded because police believed early on in their investigation that a second man was on the loose. Hansen said that the driver, who was taken into custody, was the only suspect in the case.
