A 34-year-old man was hospitalized Saturday after a friend shot him accidentally, police said.

The man, the friend and a few other people were at a house in Riverton, near 1400 W. 11940 South. The friend was cleaning a handgun when it went off about 2 p.m., and the bullet hit the man in the stomach, said Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal.

The man was alert and talking when paramedics arrived, and was taken to Intermountain Medical Center with what appeared to be a non-life-threatening injury, Hoyal said.

Hoyal said the group that witnessed the shooting described the events to investigators, who labeled it accidental.
