SOCCER • When the United States takes the field Wednesday in Honduras for the start of the final round of World Cup qualifying, Landon Donovan will be missing. The 30-year-old midfielder, a veteran of three World Cups and the American career leader in goals and assists, is taking a break from soccer following the Los Angeles Galaxy's second straight Major League Soccer title.
"Landon felt like he needed some time to figure out what was next for him, how to go forward. We all support that, but at the same time, life goes on here," fellow midfielder Michael Bradley said. "We're excited about the guys here and we're confident in the group we have."
The Americans practiced in Florida on Monday before traveling to San Pedro Sula for the match. Coach Jurgen Klinsmann maintained Donovan's absence creates opportunity for others.
Olympic medalist Reutter retires
SPEEDSKATING • Two-time Olympic medalist Katherine Reutter is retiring from short-track competition because of injuries, U.S. Speedskating announced Tuesday. Reutter, a Salt Lake City resident, won a silver and bronze at the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver. She skated to a world championship in the 1,500 meters in 2011 and was a four-time short-track national champion.
Cards' Carpenterto sit out season
baseball • Chris Carpenter, one of the best clutch pitchers in the storied history of the St. Louis Cardinals, may have thrown his final pitch. General manager John Mozeliak and manager Mike Matheny announced that Carpenter almost certainly won't pitch in 2013 and that his star-crossed career is probably over after a recurrence of a nerve injury that cost him most of last season.
