A 14-year-old Grantsville boy was injured in a rollover near Wendover on Saturday while driving a car he stole from his parents, the Utah Highway Patrol said.
Multiple motorists on Interstate 80 called 911 after spotting a reckless driver in a blue Jeep Liberty, prompting a trooper to look for the vehicle, UHP spokeswoman Jalaine Hawkes said. The trooper caught up to the westbound Jeep near the Nevada border at about 5 p.m., but the teen failed to stop and ultimately rolled the car into the median, she said.
The trooper at the scene reported that the boy acknowledged purposely speeding up and then jerking the steering wheel to the left to cause the vehicle to roll, Hawkes said.
It was not immediately clear why the boy had taken his parents car or how long he had been away from home, Hawkes said.
The boy's medical condition and injuries were not known Saturday night. He was transported by ambulance to Primary Children's Medical Center, Hawkes said.
