Seattle • Aaron Dotson's junior season is quickly unraveling due to nagging injuries.
After already having lost a month earlier in the year to a stress fracture, Dotson underwent his second surgery of the season this week, this time to repair his knee.
Utah head coach Larry Krystkowiak termed it a "procedure," a relatively minor one on the face of it. Dotson, a small forward, didn't spend time in the hospital. He was at practice on Friday, and the Seattle native traveled with the team on Saturday to the matchup against the University of Washington.
Still, Dotson is out indefinitely. Krystkowiak said it would be at least a month before he can think about returning, and the possibility exists that Dotson's season is finished.
If that proves to be the case, there is the possibility that Dotson can apply for a medical redshirt. He has played in 10 games, and for him to qualify to get the year back, he would have to play in less than 30 percent of the Utes' contests. Utah plays 30 games this year, which means the Utes will have to win a game in the Pac-12 Tournament for Dotson to have a reasonable hope of attaining another season of eligibility.
If he has played his final game this season, Dotson's best game will have been an eight-point performance against Cal State Northridge. He was counted on to provide a scoring punch from the perimeter, but hasn't done that, struggling with turnovers and fitting into the offense.
With Dotson out, expect freshman Justin Seymour to take on a bigger role for the duration of his absence. Seymour, a 6-foot-3 guard from Georgia, had his best game of the Pac-12 season on Wednesday against Washington State, scoring 11 points, grabbing five rebounds and handing out five assists.
A homecoming
Utah's starting point guard Glen Dean, along with Dotson, is from Seattle and played in his hometown for the first time in his Ute career. C.J. Wilcox, Washington's best player, is a native of Pleasant Grove and was a former All-State player for the Vikings.
