A driver suspected of shooting at other vehicles on Legacy Highway was arrested Wednesday by Davis County deputies in Farmington after leading officers on a car chase that ended in a shootout, according to police.

During a media briefing Wednesday night, Farmington police Chief Wayne Hansen said a man in a gray car was firing at a white pickup on the highway near Farmington at about 5 p.m. The shots were reported by multiple people to 911 dispatchers, which prompted officers to respond to the area. Hansen said he did not believe the people in the pickup were injured. The suspect, who was not named, exited onto Park Lane, where he was met by two Davis County sheriff's deputies in their cruisers, Hansen said.

A chase then ensued, ending at 650 W. State St., where the deputies and the suspect exchanged gunfire. Hansen said that the suspect sustained "superficial" injuries and may not have even been shot. He was taken to the hospital and was cooperating with investigators, Hansen said. The man still was not booked into jail, but Hansen said that an arrest was pending.

Police did not release the suspect's name but described him as a 37-year-old Hispanic man who was driving a rental car with Texas plates. Hansen said it appeared that man was also suspected of firing at a white pickup from a car described as a 2006 or later Toyota Camry, also with Texas plates, on I-215 Tuesday afternoon. No one was injured in that shooting.

"Those shootings do appear to be related," Hansen said.

Utah Highway Patrol Cpl. Todd Johnson said his agency, which investigated the Tuesday shooting, is waiting to hear more information about the Farmington incident but could not confirm whether there was any connection. Johnson said earlier Wednesday that the I-215 shooting did appear to be similar to another shooting being investigated by Salt Lake City police in which someone in a dark-colored Toyota reportedly fired at four people in a car traveling on 1200 West near 650 North on Saturday night. No one was injured in that shooting.

The Salt Lake Tribune will provide more information as details become available.
