Prep girls' basketball: Judge Memorial holds off Juan Diego
The old gymnasium swelled with the sounds of rustling pompoms and chants from screaming fans, hands slapping against other players and bodies crashing against the hardwood.
Thursday night at Judge Memorial, the Bulldogs and the Juan Diego Soaring Eagle found themselves locked in a frenetic game that saw Judge take a big lead into halftime only to allow its rival to pull within a single bucket with one quarter to go.
But with her team clinging to a two-point lead, Judge Memorial star guard Kailie Quinn made sure Juan Diego would never get closer.
"I just told myself to keep the intensity up," Quinn said after the 55-42 win. "Don't let them come back."
Quinn slashed to the basket for a layup. After a Juan Diego turnover, she drove in for another two points, this time crashing against the wall on her way down.
The next time down the floor, Quinn calmly picked up her dribble and sank a 3-pointer with a defender in her face.
In the end, Quinn outscored Juan Diego 10-3 in the fourth.
"It's got to feel good," said the junior, who finished with 19 on the night. "Juan Diego is your rival, and it always feels good to win."
The game started out fast-paced and sloppy, with turnovers and loose balls leading to quick buckets for both teams.
"That's how these Juan Diego-Judge games are," Bulldogs coach Anthony Alford said. "They're always going to be hectic and intense."
Judge point guard Sadie Sewell had 15 first-half points and freshman Rachel Shubella added nine of her own to lift the Bulldogs to a 35-23 lead going into the locker room.
"Everyone who got on the floor today knew their job and did their job," Alford said. "And that's what made it easy. You can't focus on Kailie when she has four other teammates doing their jobs."
Juan Diego, led by Monique and Dominique Mills, battled back. Monique finished with 17 points, while Dominique scored six.
But in the end, Quinn and the Bulldogs were too much.
