Could Robbie Findley wear claret and cobalt again?

In an offseason filled with uncertainty, Real Salt Lake is exploring the possibility of bringing the forward back to Rio Tinto Stadium.

"It's fair to say that is the type of acquisition that we would be interested in pursuing," RSL general manager Garth Lagerwey said Wednesday. "We want to sign at least two forwards. Robbie is obviously a guy who's had a lot of success for us."

The Portland Timbers currently hold Findley's rights, and the 27-year-old is under contract with the English club Nottingham Forest. RSL would have to make deals with both teams to acquire Findley.

The website Soccer By Ives reported earlier this week that Findley's rights had been traded to Salt Lake, but Lagerwey called those reports "premature."

RSL started the offseason needing to cut 25 percent of its payroll to get under the salary cap. The team traded Will Johnson to Portland, and Fabian Espindola and Jamison Olave to New York.

In return, RSL took back allocation money to help sign a striker that might bring firepower to a club that struggled to score goals to close out the regular season, and again in a first-round playoff loss.

But since scoring 15 goals and helping RSL to a championship in 2009, Findley has had some trouble finding the back of the net. He scored just six goals in 26 games in his 2010 campaign before transferring to Nottingham Forest. There, in 27 appearances, he scored six more goals.

Still, Findley has played with RSL leading scorer Alvaro Saborio before and would provide speed to help stretch the field against teams that might bunker down defensively — which RSL saw plenty of last year.

Portland acquired the rights to Findley in the 2010 Expansion Draft after RSL left the forward unprotected. In September, with his playing time limited, he was loaned to the League Two club Gillingham.
