Third-graders at Riverton Elementary School were recognized on Monday for helping to save an eagle badly burned in a wildfire around Saratoga Springs last summer.

The students organized a service project for the eagle, which was rescued from the Dump Fire, to help the bird with its recovery, said Sandy Riesgraf, a spokeswoman for the Jordan School District.

Students adopted the eagle, named Phoenix, and raised money for its rehabilitation. Students made a scrapbook chronicling Phoenix's recovery and built 30 bird perches for Phoenix and other birds injured in the fire.

The Wildlife Rehabilitation Center of Northern Utah surprised third-graders in teacher Raegan Fay's class on Monday with a thank-you party, where the children were able to show off how they helped Phoenix recover.
