UHP: Jackknifed semi stalls I-80 traffic in Salt Lake City
A jackknifed semi-trailer rig caused motorists and Utah Highway Patrol troopers alike massive headaches for several hours on Wednesday.
UHP Sgt. Ted Tingey said the rig went out of control and crashed about 11 a.m. on eastbound Interstate 80 near where the freeway merges into southbound I-15.
The cab ended up straddling the concrete median barrier wall, while the trailer blocked I-80 lanes behind it until about 4 p.m.
Tingey said fuel also leaked from the cab, resulting in hazardous materials workers being called to the scene.
Eastbound lanes of I-80 in the area, along with the ramps to southbound I-15 and 600 South into downtown Salt Lake City, had been closed to traffic.
The driver of the semi escaped with minor injuries. No other vehicles were involved, Tingey said.
