A 49-year-old Sandy man died Saturday night after he crashed his SUV into a parked tracked excavator.

Sandy police said the man, whose name has not been released, drove west and fast on 9400 South about 10:30 p.m. when he failed to navigate the construction zone near 850 East and struck the track hoe.

Police said he died on impact.

Officers said the construction zone contained lighted directional arrows and tall barricades to cordon the area, but the man drove through them and into the construction vehicle.

Police said speed and alcohol are both believed to be factors.

No one else was injured.
