Deer Valley Resort will replace its Deer Crest chairlift with a new high-speed detachable quad, part of $8 million in improvements to be made this summer.

To be called the Mountaineer Express, the new lift will increase the number of skiers who are carried up Little Baldy Mountain by 1,200 skiers per hour, said Emily Summers, spokeswoman for the Park City-area ski resort.

"Deer Valley Resort is dedicated to remaining the No. 1 resort in North America," said Bob Wheaton, resort president and general manager, referring to Deer Valley's ranking five years in a row in Ski magazine. "We are continually assessing needed improvements that will be the most advantageous to our guests."

The resort also is remodeling Snow Park Restaurant, replacing the wooden deck at Empire Canyon Lodge with heated pavers, expanding snowmaking in Empire Canyon, installing more energy-efficient snowmaking "guns" and buying five more grooming machines.
