A traffic stop resulted in the discovery of 100 pounds of marijuana in Sevier County on Saturday.
A Sevier County Sheriff's sergeant stopped a car driving on Interstate 70 for speeding. The driver, a 32-year-old man from Las Vegas, told the officer the car was a rental and he was not the one who had rented it, according to sheriff's office news release.
The man's story about the rental car fell apart once the officer asked him to call the supposed renter, the release said. A drug dog called to the scene indicated there was something in the trunk of the car. Police found six suitcases, all containing vacuum sealed packages that tested for marijuana, according to the release.
The man was booked into Sevier County jail on suspicion of possession of control substance with intent to distribute. The marijuana was estimated to have a street value of $760,000.
