New polar bear settles in at Salt Lake City's Hogle Zoo
Rizzo, a 14-year-old polar bear, got acquainted Wednesday with her new digs at Salt Lake City's Hogle Zoo.
The bear arrived Tuesday from the Cincinnati Zoo. She will greet visitors as part of Hogle Zoo's new $18 million Rocky Shores exhibit set to open to the public June 1.
Rocky Shores, paid for by a voter-approved bond, will occupy 3.5 acres across the zoo's northwest corner. In addition to Rizzo, the attraction will feature three other bears as well as seals, sea lions, river otters and bald eagles. There will be underwater viewing space, new eateries and green space designed as a children's play area.
Rocky Shores, which also will serve as a long-term breeding and conservation facility for polar bears, is the largest project created in the zoo's 80-year history.
