Friends and family of missing woman Susan Powell have formed a committee to create a pair of memorials to her and her sons.
The committee on Monday requested proposals for artists to create the memorial and for land in Utah and Washington state where it would reside.
Powell friend, Kiirsi Hellewell, who announced the committee and proposals, said the committee wants memorials in or near West Valley City — from where Susan Powell lived with her family and disappeared — and in Puyallup, Wash. — the hometown of Susan and Josh Powell.
In West Valley City, Hellewell is hoping public land can be donated, perhaps in a park or at a library. The call for proposals says the memorial should be 10-by-10-feet or 12-by-12-feet.
"It would be really, really nice if the land was donated," Hellewell said. "If it isn't donated then we'll have to buy it."
Hellewell is estimating materials and landscaping for the memorials will total $150,000. The committee is planning fundraisers, she said.
The committee wants a sculpture of Susan Powell and her deceased sons, 6-year-old Charlie and 4-year-old Braden. The request for proposals calls for something uplifting that will also call attention to violence and abuse.
"We hope it will be more universal to the women and kids that suffer these things," Hellewell said.
West Valley City spokesman Aaron Crim said the city has not yet been approached about such a memorial. The city has guidelines for the creation of memorials and one for Susan Powell would have to meet the guidelines and follow the city's process, he said.
"We often do have groups that come to us and ask for memorials and donate various plots of land," Crim said.
Susan Powell disappeared Dec. 6, 2009. She remains missing, though friends and family assume she is dead. Her husband, Josh Powell was the only person of interest police had named in her disappearance.
Feb. 5, Josh Powell murdered Charlie and Braden, at his rented home in Graham, Wash., then killed himself.
In February, Pleasant Green Cemetery in Magna donated a plot for a memorial to Susan Powell and her sons. Those plans fell through.
