When Honduran-American comic Carlos Mencia walks out onstage Sunday, April 15, having dropped nearly 50 pounds won't be the only change audiences might see. After enduring a public drubbing by fellow comics such as Marc Maron over charges of joke-stealing and possessing an oversized ego, in a Tribune interview Mencia said "I have changed my ways" after a self-imposed period of self-examination. "There are things that I like about myself, and things I don't like about myself," Mencia said. His shyness is often mistaken as arrogance, Mencia said, so he makes a point of "trying to engage more with people." What hasn't changed is Mencia's popularity, boosted by the 44-year-old's former Comedy Central show "Mind of Mencia." "I want to talk about things that are on people's minds that they are afraid to talk about," he said. "I want to be ahead of the curve." A veteran of performing in Wendover, Mencia joked about the Utahns who have come to his past shows. "Everybody is LDS before the border, but not after," he said.
