Five people died and another five were injured on Utah's roadways in accidents overnight.
At 11:52 p.m. Saturday, a Toyota Camry drifted across southbound Interstate 15 near 11900 South and slammed into the back of a semitruck parked on the side of the road, said Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Mary Kaye Lucas. The Camry's sole occupant, driver Tanya Bendowski, 26, died at the scene. It appears the driver did not brake, and fatigue may have been a factor in the crash.
Just after midnight, a driver going down Parleys Canyon veered off the road and down a 200- to 300-foot embankment. The car came to rest at the bottom of the ravine, straddling a narrow river. The female passenger, Camile Dosch, 37, who was not wearing a seat belt, died at the scene. The male driver was taken to the hospital with critical injuries, Lucas said. Road conditions do not appear to be a factor.
At 2 a.m. Sunday in West Valley City, a truck struck and killed two women who were crossing Redwood Road near 3360 South. The women, identified as Andrea Fuguel, 37, and Erica Warneke, 35, were not in a crosswalk. They were taken to the hospital and pronounced dead. The truck driver, 46, was cooperating with police. No charges have been issued, and the accident is still under investigation.
Just before 6 a.m. Sunday two vehicles collided head-on near Grantsville in Tooele County on State Road 138 and Erda Way. A vehicle heading eastbound on the narrow, two-lane road had drifted into the westbound lane. The driver of a westbound vehicle saw the oncoming vehicle and swerved into the eastbound lane just as the other car swerved back into the correct lane. The two collided and Rocio Macias, 26, of Azusa, Calif., died at the scene. Another person was flown to the hospital with critical but non-life-threatening injuries. Three others were taken to the hospital in an ambulance. Fatigue again appeared to be a factor in the crash, Lucas said.
