Provo • Not many teams that BYU will play this year own a winning record against the Cougars — not even Texas.

But San Jose State does.

The Spartans were 9-5 against BYU prior to Saturday night's game, having won the first eight meetings between the schools.

Prior to this visit, the last time San Jose State played in Provo it lost 46-43 to the Cougars when both schools were members of the Western Athletic Conference.

Next year, BYU is scheduled to play at SJSU, but the date has not been set.

Tight end time

Suddenly, BYU's tight ends are back to being a vital part of the Cougars' offense. Marcus Mathews became the first Cougar tight end to catch a touchdown pass in 17 games last week in the 27-24 win over Utah State.

Saturday, tight end Richard Wilson caught a 21-yard touchdown pass from Riley Nelson and also had a 35-yard reception that set up another TD. Austin Holt also had a 16-yard reception in the first half.

Lighting the Y

Skyline High football coach Roger DuPaix, who picked up his 300th career win on Friday night, was Saturday's night's Y-lighter before the game. DuPaix, father of BYU running backs coach Joe DuPaix, played for the Cougars from 1959-62 and was an all-conference offensive guard under coach Hal Mitchell.
