Trans-Siberian Orchestra

Spotlight show • Trans-Siberian Orchestra is performing its rock opera "The Lost Christmas Eve" for the first time ever on its current tour. Creator Paul O'Neill said turning that song cycle into a laser-and-lights, classical-meets-rock spectacle was one of the few things in life that ever made him nervous. (Another time he was nervous was when TSO debuted another rock opera, "Beethoven's Last Night," in Vienna.) But, just as in Vienna, audiences have been won over for one reason or another. "The Lost Christmas Eve" is right for the anxious times, O'Neill said, with its "themes of hope and redemption." Almost two decades after O'Neill conceived of the Christmastime juggernaut, he's grateful that even in the days of the Internet, live music is alive and well. At least when it comes to TSO, which, due to demand for tickets, is playing two Salt Lake City shows in one day. "On paper, TSO shouldn't work," he said. "All that matters is that you're great."

When • Wednesday, Nov. 21; 4 and 8 p.m.

Where • EnergySolutions Arena, 301 W. South Temple, Salt Lake City

Tickets • $30-$59 at SmithsTix

Royal Bliss

Spotlight show • For most of the noncooking population, the day before Thanksgiving is a day to leave work early and do absolutely nothing for the rest of the evening while your cooking family and/or friends work themselves into hysterics worrying about how long to cook a 12-pound turkey. But for local hard-rock band Royal Bliss, this is the 10th straight year of performing the night before Thanksgiving, in what has become a "tradition," said frontman Neal Middleton. It's a gracious sentiment, considering that Middleton could be allowed to be bitter because he was robbed by the four clueless judges of "The Voice" earlier this year. But with new album "Waiting Out the Storm" out this year, Middleton is thankful that his band is still going strong. "We're happy to be in control of our own destiny," he said. VanMarter Project, American Hitmen, Joel Pack and The Pops will open.

When • Wednesday, Nov. 21, 8 p.m.

Peter Breinholt

Spotlight show • Midnight Madness runs all day on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving. Local musicians Peter Breinholt and Sam Payne will keep shoppers at South Towne Center company from midnight to 4 a.m., with Breinholt gigging from midnight to 2 a.m. Breinholt, a singer-songwriter well-known for his Christmas shows and other Salt Lake valley concerts, said when mall officials called him four years ago with the offer of the gig, he was incredulous. "I told my band, and I said, 'Are you sitting down?' " he said. But he ended up having fun and has been back every year. One year, he even flew in from his in-laws' Thanksgiving celebration in Palm Springs to play the unusually timed mall show. There's one thing he always make sure, though — he must eat loads of stuffing with heaping scoops of gravy on top at the Thanksgiving meal beforehand. Carb-loading is good for a midnight show — just ask Axl Rose.

The Babies

Spotlight show • Last year Cassie Ramone came to Kilby Court leading Brooklyn noise-pop band Vivian Girls, but this year she is coming with her side project The Babies. The Babies began several years ago when she started making lo-fi music just for fun with then-housemate Kevin Morby of the band Woods, although the first time the two met they argued passionately about the virtues of Courtney Love. With that argument over, the band has gone on to create two albums' worth of lo-fi pop-punk with plenty of guitar buzz and Ramone cooing like Nico to Morby's Lou Reed. There still remains one argument, though. Ramone said in a phone interview that she hates the name of the group, created when she said they seemed like complainers and whiners. It was meant as only a temporary placeholder, but now the band is too far along to change it.

MOVIES • Compiled by Sean P. Means

With Thanksgiving, there's a two-day head start on the movie weekend — and you're going to need it, because there are six movies opening today.

Best of the bunch is "Life of Pi," Ang Lee's beautiful rendering of Yann Martel's novel about an Indian teen (Suraj Sharma) who survives a shipwreck, and must contend with a bengal tiger in his lifeboat. The gorgeous visuals, and David Magee's lucid adaptation, celebrates Pi's struggle and the joys of storytelling.

Another big Oscar contender is "Silver Linings Playbook," an uneven comedy about a recent mental patient (Bradley Cooper) trying to get his life back together — and encountering a cop's widow (Jennifer Lawrence) who may be more messed up than he is. Lawrence's performance is riveting, but the movie writer-director David O. Russell builds around it isn't up to the same standard.

The animated "Rise of the Guardians" is a lively and witty tale, based on William Joyce's "The Guardians of Childhood" books. It supposes a "Justice League" of folkloric figures — Santa (voice of Alec Baldwin), the Easter Bunny (voice of Hugh Jackman), the Tooth Fairy (voice of Isla Fisher) and the Sandman — joining forces and enlisting Jack Frost (voice of Chris Pine) to battle the Boogeyman (voice of Jude Law) and protect children. The movie is a little dark and scary for little children, but for everyone else it's a treat.

"Red Dawn" is an unnecessary remake of the 1984 Cold War action drama, this time with North Koreans invading the Pacific Northwest instead of the Soviets. It's up to a Marine (Chris Hemsworth), his high-school quarterback brother (Josh Peck), and some of their friends (including Adrienne Palicki and Josh Hutcherson) to band together into a guerrilla unit. It's bombastic, ridiculous, and shot with nausea-inducing camerawork.

The art-house slate is dominated by "Smashed," an absorbing drama about alcoholism — centering on a schoolteacher (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) who decides to get sober, which puts a strain on her marriage to her still-drinking husband (Aaron Paul). The strong supporting cast (including Nick Offerman, Megan Mullally and Octavia Spencer) bring some offbeat humor to the story, but it's Winstead's fearless performance that propels the drama.

Lastly, there's "A Royal Affair," a period Danish drama about palace intrigue in the late 1700s, with a young queen (Alicia Vikander), a mad king (), and a German doctor (Mads Mikkelsen) who becomes the king's advisor and the queen's lover. The highlight is Mikkelsen's nuanced performance.
