The interminable shopping, planning and socializing that hit your schedule with gale force after Thanksgiving can overwhelm the hardiest of constitutions.

Entertainment has long been there to take the edge off, which is why it's more prominent than ever during the holidays. Nothing says "treat yourself and the family" quite like a holiday stage production, and Utah has them all, from Salt Lake City to Cedar City, from adaptations to original productions and plenty in between.

Ebenezer hits some high notes

There's a first time for everything, including Pioneer Theater Company's first-ever production of "A Christmas Carol," musical or no.

Karen Azenberg, the company's artistic director, has no clue why Utah's regional theater company of note waited so long to break the ice on a holiday favorite most everyone knows and loves. "Perhaps there was so much competition from other theater companies in the Salt Lake Valley," she muses.

"A Christmas Carol: The Musical"features music by Oscar-winning composer Alan Menken, lyrics and book by Lynn Ahrens with book assistance by Mike Ockrent, not to mention a cast of more than 30. That's almost the size of "Les Misérables," but without the passionate history lesson. This time, Christmas takes center stage with all the song, dance and spirit of life rediscovered that Dickens' story can fit onto one single stage. (See the story on D1.)
