Throughout the month of August, Tribune writers are tasting our way through some of Utah’s finest frozen confections including ice cream, gelato, frozen yogurt and shave ice in an effort to beat the heat. Today’s pick:
LaVell Vanilla • Named after Brigham Young University’s legendary football coach LaVell Edwards, this is the top-selling ice cream on the Provo campus. Some people might say vanilla is the favorite because BYU students and alumni are proudly conservative. But customers have been known to kick up their heels a bit and add fresh fruit, nuts and crushed candy bars to their scoop.
BYU Creamery • 1209 N. 900 East, Provo. Open Monday-Thursday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.; and Friday-Saturday, 11 a.m. to midnight. Also available at the Wyview and Helaman buildings and the outlet store in the Culinary Support Center (the old creamery).
Cost • $2.30 for a single scoop; $3.40 for a double.
Shop talk • BYU has been making ice cream since 1948, when the College of Agriculture had a dairy herd and needed to do something with the milk. The ice cream continues to be made with milk from Utah County farms and contains 14 percent butter fat — higher than most grocery-store brands, which have about 10 percent butter fat. No wonder BYU Dining Services makes about 200,000 gallons of ice cream annually. The second most popular flavor is Earnestly Chocolate, which has marshmallow and caramel swirls and mini chocolate-coated caramel cups, named after Ernest Wilkinson, the school’s president from 1951 to 1971.
